A 26-year-old Wrexham man has been sentenced to prison after throwing a bicycle wheel during a large-scale street disturbance that left a woman unconscious and several police officers injured 👮♂️
Reef Byfield, of Pen y Wern, Rhosllanerchrugog, received a 16-month jail term at Mold Crown Court today after pleading guilty to wounding by inflicting grievous bodily harm.
The incident occurred in the Wern Las area of Rhosllanerchrugog on September 21st, 2023, involving up to 50 people. Byfield threw a bicycle wheel across the street, intending to hit police officers, but instead struck a woman, rendering her unconscious and causing head injuries.
Five police officers were injured during the disorder, with three being directly assaulted.
Detective Constable Mark Griffiths said: “This was a shocking incident where a small number of officers were faced with an extremely hostile crowd whilst trying to go about their lawful duties. The violence left them in fear for their safety. Byfield’s contribution to the disorder led to a woman being knocked to the ground and sustaining injuries to her head, which could also have seriously injured one of the officers had it hit them. His behaviour that day was unacceptable, and I welcome the sentence rightly passed to him today. I hope it serves as a lesson for anyone foolish enough to consider taking part in this type of disorder in future.”
A 28-year-old man is due to stand trial for separate offences that occurred on the day.
