A Wrexham man has been sentenced to 19 months in prison after going on a dangerous driving spree through Chester city centre whilst drunk and disqualified 🚗⚖️

Llewellyn Parry-Jones, 28, of Borras Hall Lane, Llan Pwll, pleaded guilty at Chester Crown Court to multiple offences including dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance, obstructing a constable, drink driving, public order and possession of cannabis.

The court heard how on Saturday, May 3 at 12:05pm, police were alerted that a white Vauxhall Combo van was being driven in Chester by a disqualified driver suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

CCTV footage from 12:40pm onwards showed Parry-Jones driving around the city centre tailgating other cars before colliding with a pedestrian on Grosvenor Park Road. He then increased speed significantly, crossed into the second lane, and drove on the wrong side of Vicars Lane towards Pepper Street, overtaking four stationary cars towards oncoming traffic.

On Bridge Street, he turned right across the front of oncoming traffic at a crossroads junction. When two officers attempted to stop the van, Parry-Jones deliberately reversed into the front of one police vehicle before trying to flee through bollards onto the pedestrianised shopping precinct.

Unable to get through the bollards, he collided with a bicycle in a bike rack. When officers arrested him, Parry-Jones was physically and verbally aggressive, tried to punch an officer, and cannabis was found in his coat.

PC David Smith said: “His erratic driving around Chester City Centre while intoxicated was incomprehensible. The city centre was busy with vehicles and pedestrians at the time. His behaviour was reckless and could have caused a serious or even fatal incident. When we were able to bring him to a stop safely, he tried to evade capture, causing damage to our police vehicles and tried to assault officers. His behaviour was idiotic and dangerous and now he is paying the consequences.”

Parry-Jones was sentenced to 19 months in prison and banned from driving for three years, nine months and 14 days. He must also take an extended driving test.
