Andrew RT Davies has resigned as leader of the Welsh Conservative Senedd group following internal party tensions. The announcement came after a confidence vote revealed significant opposition within the group.
In a candid letter shared on social media, Davies explained: “Last week, a group of Senedd members approached me, threatening to resign their positions in shadow cabinet if I did not agree to step down as leader. I therefore requested a motion of confidence in my leadership to be held at a meeting this morning.”
Davies acknowledged that whilst he maintained majority support, the substantial minority opposition made his position “untenable”. He emphasised the dedication of grassroots supporters, describing them as “the lifeblood of our party” whilst drawing a pointed contrast with “some Conservative Senedd members”.
Looking ahead, Davies stressed the importance of party unity: “Moving forward, it is clear the Welsh Conservative Party must decide exactly what it stands for.” He confirmed he won’t be standing in the upcoming leadership contest.
The outgoing leader concluded his letter with gratitude: “Public service is a privilege and I will remain forever grateful for being given the chance to play my part.”
