Two men who carried out a series of violent robberies near Cardiff city centre have been jailed for over six years each. 👮‍♂️

Kevin Davies, 34, and Daniel Heath, 33, targeted three men in random attacks outside an Esso petrol station on Cathedral Road near Pontcanna in the early hours of May 1 last year.

The pair deliberately chose victims who had been drinking alcohol as they waited at the garage at around 1am. During the brief but brutal attacks, they beat the men, stole mobile phones, bank cards, driving licences and car keys. Davies then stole one of the victims’ cars using the keys he’d taken.

All three victims required hospital treatment at University Hospital of Wales. One suffered a fractured jaw, another had a broken nose and collarbone, while the third sustained a head laceration. Each victim needed corrective procedures.

One victim stated: “We were out celebrating the launch of our business venture. We’d had a great night, we went for a few drinks and called a taxi back to the hotel. On arrival I went to check if the apartment we were staying at was right. When I turned around (my friend) had been punched so hard blood was visible all over the floor and his head. When I saw one of them rifling through his pockets it made me think: ‘Is this actually real and do people do this?’ I gave them the cash in my wallet to get them away.”

Another victim who was knocked unconscious said: “I feel lucky to be alive. You hear so many stories of head injuries causing death. I had trouble sleeping for weeks after the incident and still get nightmares about it.”

The third victim explained: “The attack left me with a broken collarbone and nose which have deeply affected my life but physical pain is only part of the suffering. There is also the psychological toll this has had on me. We have three adopted children each with trauma induced attachment needs and their lives have been turned upside down by this attack.”

At Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Lucy Crowther sentenced Davies to seven years and five months with an extended licence period of four years, and Heath to six years and nine months with an extended licence period of four years. Both will serve two-thirds of their sentences before being considered for release. 🔒
