A predator who pretended to be a vulnerable teenager in care to groom and sexually assault children has been locked up for three years.

Kai Giggie, 26, also known as Kyle Wellburn and originally from Aberdeen, appeared at Newport Crown Court on Friday where he was sentenced after admitting child abduction, sexual activity with a child and two sexual assaults of a child.

The 26-year-old had been masquerading as a child aged between 13 and 16, claiming he was in foster care and had escaped abusive placements in Scotland. He used this fabricated identity to befriend local youngsters before sexually assaulting them.

Police launched an investigation after an adult became concerned about a friend of their child who didn’t appear to be under any adult supervision. Officers uncovered Giggie’s elaborate deception and discovered he had been grooming multiple victims.

In one particularly alarming incident, Giggie abducted one of the children and took them to London without their family’s knowledge or consent. The offences took place between June and July 2025.

Alongside his prison sentence, Giggie was handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 10-year restraining order.

DC Julia Page, who led the investigation, said: “In all my career in policing, I have never come across an individual so manipulative who would go to the lengths Giggie did to gain the trust of his victims and their families. He took advantage of them at their most vulnerable of ages and used this to dominate them for his own benefit. I want to praise the victims in this case for their patience, bravery, and courage whilst the investigation was ongoing. These investigations can take time, but I hope that this sentencing goes some way in providing closure for them. Giggie is a significant risk to children, and we believe there may be other children who he has offended against. I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse and not reported it, for whatever reason, to contact us. You will be listened to.”
