A 25-year-old man who was caught hoarding child sexual abuse material just weeks after receiving a suspended prison sentence has been locked up for 18 months.
Jake James, of Ystrad Mynach in Caerphilly county, had previously been handed a suspended jail term and a sexual harm prevention order in April 2025 after admitting offences including making indecent images of children.
How he was caught
Two Gwent Police officers responsible for monitoring James visited him and discovered he had amassed further collections of child abuse imagery on his phone – among them an image depicting the rape of a baby.
He had also violated the conditions of his sexual harm prevention order by installing the self-deleting messaging app Snapchat and wiping his browsing history.
His offending spanned a four-month period from 1 May 2025 to 30 August 2025.
The charges
James pleaded guilty to making 29 category A indecent images of children – the most severe classification involving rape – alongside 41 category B images and a further batch at category C. He also admitted breaching his sexual harm prevention order.
Defence and sentencing
His barrister, Charles Archer, acknowledged the inevitable outcome, telling Newport Crown Court: “He knows that the only sentence today will be one of immediate custody.”
“He greatly regrets the position he finds himself in today. I would ask that he be given one third credit for his early guilty pleas.”
Judge Daniel Williams was unmoved by the defendant’s emotional display in the dock, telling him: “It’s too late to be tearful. Behind every image is a real child and real abuse.”
James was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment and will serve up to half before release on licence, with time already spent on remand deducted from the total. He must register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made the subject of a new sexual harm prevention order for the same period. A victim surcharge was also imposed.
