A Newport hardware shop and two of the city’s pubs were targeted in a run of break-ins that has now been admitted by a 39-year-old man.
Kieron Davies, of no fixed abode, faced Newport Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary. He has not yet been sentenced.
The break-ins
The earliest of the three offences took place at The Lamb Public House on Bridge Street on January 7, where Davies got inside and made off with several bottles of spirits valued at roughly £100.
Commercial Street business Danny’s Hardware was targeted on June 6. Davies took approximately 100 vapes, worth in the region of £1,000, along with £100 in cash from the premises.
Four days later, on June 10, he broke into The Potters Public House on Upper Dock Street. Spirits and champagne were taken from that raid, with the haul put at around £500.
Taken together, the three raids account for something in the region of £1,700 in stock and cash.
The charges
Each count was brought as burglary other than a dwelling with intent to steal, an offence under Section 9(1)(a) of the Theft Act 1968.
What happens next
Rather than dealing with the case immediately, magistrates put sentencing back and directed that a pre-sentence report be compiled first.
Davies was released on conditional bail and must appear again at Newport Magistrates’ Court on August 13, when he will learn his fate.
