A 33-year-old Cardiff man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for deliberately driving his car at speed into two teenagers following a violent altercation at an Airbnb property.

Johnathan Newbury of Pentywn was convicted of possession of a blade and inflicting and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm after a trial in March. The shocking incident occurred on July 5, 2024, in Cathays, Cardiff, after a disagreement escalated between guests staying at the same accommodation.

🚗 CCTV footage captured the terrifying moment Newbury drove his dark SUV on the wrong side of Crwys Road before deliberately colliding with the victims, aged 17 and 18, at the junction of Malefant Street. The impact threw both teenagers into the air, causing serious injuries to the youngest victim.

The confrontation began in Bruce Street when Newbury was seen getting out of his vehicle with three other males who were armed with a large knife and chased the victims. He then returned to his SUV and used it as a weapon.

At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Monday, June 16, Newbury was sentenced to eight years in prison plus two years on extended licence. Upon release, he will face a two-year driving ban.

Detective Sergeant George Buckley said: “Newbury used extreme violence to attack the victims, and it was just fortunate that the injuries were not more serious. The physical and mental impact on the victims has been significant. We hope the sentencing will help the victims in their recovery. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the witnesses in this case as their evidence was crucial in securing justice.” ⚖️
