A 21-year-old man who drove deliberately at police officers before fleeing has been sentenced to over three years in prison.

Nathaniel Cummings, of Adamsdown, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply cocaine and possessing criminal property at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Thursday, 1st May 2025. He was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, 5th June 2025 to three years and four months in prison, and banned from driving for one year.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 12th June 2024, when officers spotted a BMW 1-series during a routine check on Palmerston Road at the junction with Cardiff Road in Barry. When officers got out of their car to speak to Cummings, he drove the vehicle deliberately at them, narrowly avoiding them before speeding off.

After a short pursuit through Barry, Cummings stopped in Churchfields where he and two passengers fled the car and attempted to hide in a nearby hedge. With assistance from the police helicopter and dog units, all three were located and arrested.

During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered over £1,600 stored in the central armrest and 24 sealed bags of cocaine. 💊

DC Pughsley said: “Nathaniel Cummings showed complete disregard for the safety of other road users and our officers during the pursuit. Driving in such a manner can have disastrous consequences.

“I hope this sentence sends out a strong message, that it is never acceptable to drive in such a manner and that we are always on patrol and could be anywhere.”
