Police discovered 26 wraps of crack cocaine on a Cardiff man who admitted he planned to sell them to fund his own drug habit. 🚔

Matthew Young, 42, was stopped by officers in St Mary’s Street on February 11 this year after being spotted with another man in Cardiff city centre. When questioned if he had anything on him, Young told police he had “only a couple of wraps.”

A search revealed a green plastic bag in Young’s trouser pocket containing individual wraps of white powder, a mobile phone, and £45 in cash.

After being arrested and taken to Cardiff Bay police station, a further search uncovered 26 wraps of crack cocaine weighing 0.1g each, with an estimated total value of £260.

During his interview, Young claimed a man had given him the drugs to deal on his behalf. He admitted he needed heroin that day as he had missed his methadone prescription and intended to sell the wraps to purchase drugs for himself.

Young, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A drugs at Cardiff Crown Court. The court heard he has seven previous convictions, mostly related to drug possession, including one previous conviction for possession with intent to supply heroin, for which he received a two-year sentence.

In mitigation, the court was told Young’s previous convictions were largely unrelated to the current offence, and he was suffering with depression at the time.

Recorder Andrew Hammond sentenced Young to a total of two years imprisonment on Tuesday. ⚖️
