A Caerphilly man has been sentenced to two years in prison after biting his partner’s face, strangling her while she was driving, and subjecting her to months of controlling behaviour.

Jordan Crewe, 27, of Second Avenue, Trecenydd, pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, controlling/coercive behaviour and harassment.

The court heard how Crewe controlled what his partner wore, hid her make-up, and prevented family visits unless he was present. After bail conditions were imposed, he breached them by barging into her home, deflating her car tyres, and sending harassment letters from prison.

In a particularly violent incident on New Year’s Eve, Crewe threatened his partner with a dog lead while she was driving, before pulling her hair and hood from behind, leaving her struggling to breathe. He then damaged her car’s gear box cover and refused to leave the vehicle.

The defendant also activated a tracker on her phone, threatened suicide to blackmail her, and sent videos pretending to hang from a tree.

In her powerful statement to the court, his former partner said: “When I first met him he swept me off my feet. I believed we were perfect for each other until I got pregnant and everything changed. I was a happy bubbly person but I am now a shell of the person I was before. I hid bruises from my family with make up or clothing. Everyone warned me about how dangerous he was but I was so in love with him and the idea of our perfect family, I was extremely naïve. I believed everything that came out of his mouth.

“He hid my make-up away from me so I had to hide away in the house as I could no longer cover the bruises. I started to lose contact with friends and family, my mental health spiralled out of control and I felt so low. I believed his words when he said my children would be better off without me. I made plans to take my own life and tried to hang myself… I still have not healed from things he did to me and I’m not sure I will. The mental and emotional abuse I suffered will stay with me forever. I thought he wanted to take me away from my children, from my babies. I’ve been back and forth the doctors with suicidal thoughts because of him. I will never trust another man again for as long as I live.”

The court heard Crewe had previous convictions for malicious communications, harassment, sending offensive messages, cannabis possession, and possession of a bladed article.

Recorder Robin Rouch ordered Crewe to serve one year in custody before being released on licence. ⚖️
