Andrew RT Davies has retained his position as Welsh Conservative leader in the Senedd following a closely contested confidence vote, securing victory with nine supporters against seven opponents.
The crucial vote took place on Tuesday morning within the Senedd estate after concerns were raised by fellow party members last week. Davies, who has led the Welsh Conservatives for the majority of the past 13 years, faced mounting pressure over his social media presence and questions about the party’s direction.
Former Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb suggested the party might need “a refresh” before the 2026 Senedd election, particularly significant as recent polling places the Conservatives in fourth position in Wales, trailing behind Labour, Reform, and Plaid Cymru.
Davies’ leadership has sparked debate within the party, with some Westminster Conservatives questioning whether voters are being offered a clear alternative vision. His recent social media activities, including posts about halal meat and the potential abolition of the Senedd, have drawn criticism from various quarters, including former leader Nick Bourne.
While supporters argue Davies is effectively countering the challenge posed by Reform UK, critics within the party express concern about the need to expand their voter base.
