A 36-year-old man who strangled, headbutted and bit his former partner, and told her he would kill her and her young son, has been sent to prison for two years and nine months.
Christian Ambrosen, of North Road, Ystrad Mynach, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after admitting four offences arising from the incident on Wednesday February 18.
The attack
Prosecutor Mari Watkins told the court the ordeal lasted around an hour. Ambrosen punched and headbutted the woman, put his hands around her neck, and bit her on the arm and leg, leaving scars that will not heal.
He told her he would stab her with a knife he claimed was kept on top of a wardrobe, and made threats to kill both her and her child. Her car and mobile phone were also damaged.
The escape
The woman got away when Ambrosen fell into what the court heard was a “deep sleep”. She climbed out through a bathroom window with her son and got to safety.
She was later treated at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil for injuries including two black eyes and a bloodshot eye.
In a personal statement read to the court, she said: “I feel much more stressed about everything – it has changed my personality.”
Previous offending
Ambrosen was on licence at the time, having only recently been released from a sentence for assaulting a different partner. His record includes convictions for grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm and controlling or coercive behaviour.
He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, making threats to kill and criminal damage.
Mitigation
Kevin Seal, defending, said: “He has shown genuine remorse and he deeply regrets these offences. The defendant wishes her recovery and he hopes that, in time, she will forgive him.”
The court was told Ambrosen has “chronic ADHD”.
Sentencing
Recorder Robin Rouch said the offending was so serious that nothing short of immediate custody would do.
Ambrosen will serve around 40 per cent of the 33-month term before release on licence. He was also handed a 10-year restraining order barring any contact with the woman, and must pay a victim surcharge.
As he was taken down, he told the judge: “I just want to say sorry.”
