Welsh politicians could see their salaries increase to £76,380 next year, as the independent remuneration board proposes a 6% pay rise for Members of the Senedd.
The proposal would lift the current 3% cap on annual increases that has been in place since 2021, bringing MS pay more in line with average earnings across Wales. 📊
Dr Elizabeth Haywood, chair of the Independent Remuneration Board, explained: “The latest average earning figures for 2023/24 in November confirmed a three-year period of unexpected and consistent growth in average salaries.”
Under the plans, First Minister would receive a total salary of £167,081, whilst the Senedd’s Llywydd (presiding officer) would see their pay rise to £125,310.
The board’s chair added: “The board’s review focused on its core objectives and principles to ensure members are remunerated fairly and provided with sufficient resources to support them in their duties, whilst ensuring that decisions are appropriate within the wider financial circumstances of Wales and represent value for money.”
The consultation remains open until 19 February, with the proposal including provisions for “winding-up payments” for MSs departing after the next election.
