Police Issue Urgent Christmas Warning Over E-bike and E-scooter Safety đš
Police forces across Wales are urging Christmas shoppers to think carefully before purchasing e-bikes and e-scooters as gifts, highlighting serious safety concerns and legal restrictions.
In a stark warning, authorities revealed several recent incidents, including a case in Towyn where riders were caught travelling at dangerous speeds of 50mph on footpaths. A subsequent police helicopter deployment led to one arrest.
“We understand that e-scooters may seem like a fun and exciting gift idea in the run up to Christmas, but it’s important to understand the rules and risks that come with them,” said Sgt Dave Mallin of Dyfed-Powys Police.
Two serious crashes in North Wales have highlighted these dangers. A 19-year-old suffered serious injuries in an Anglesey incident, while another rider sustained life-changing injuries after colliding with a car in Wrexham.
Det Insp Tim Evans from North Wales Police emphasised: “Our real concern is that means more risk of serious injury, not just to the riders, but to members of the public.”
Key points for potential buyers:
– E-scooters are illegal on roads, footpaths and cycle paths in Wales
– E-bikes must have pedals and motors no larger than 250 watts and speed must be limited to 15.5mph.
– Riders of E-bikes must be 14 or older
– Proper safety gear is essential
The UK government confirmed: “Private e-scooters remain illegal to use on public roads and those found breaking the law can face fines and criminal prosecution.” âïž
