A man who went on a shoplifting spree across Newport – targeting everything from designer clothing to coffee and meat – is awaiting sentence after admitting to five thefts.

Houssam El-Kassem, 42, of no fixed abode, appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to the string of offences committed between January 28 and March 25.

The thefts

Among the items taken was a Fred Perry hoodie worth £100 from JD Sports. El-Kassem also stole clothing valued at £295 from River Island, coffee worth £47.92 from B&M, and meat worth £28 along with laundry products valued at £13.10 from Tesco Express.

The total value of goods stolen came to £484.

Previous convictions

The court heard El-Kassem was jailed for 28 weeks in 2024 for similar shoplifting offences.

Next steps

The case was adjourned to April 22 so that a pre-sentence report can be prepared. El-Kassem was granted conditional bail in the meantime.
