A 27-year-old man from Pontypool has been sentenced to a total of 33 months in prison after admitting to a sustained campaign of controlling and coercive behaviour against his girlfriend over the course of their four-month relationship.

Ieuan Woodyatt, of Warwick Close, New Inn, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship and to harassment after sending threatening messages to the victim and her family.

The abuse

The court heard that between January 1 and April 19, 2025, Woodyatt subjected his then-partner to repeated physical and verbal abuse, fuelled by unfounded accusations that she was being unfaithful.

Prosecutor Sol Hartley outlined how Woodyatt strangled the woman, spat at her, made threats to kill her, threw a vape at her, and warned he would destroy her car. He also threatened to have someone “smash her face in.”

Victim’s words

A victim impact statement read to the court revealed the lasting toll the abuse had taken. The woman described how Woodyatt’s behaviour had left her an introvert, adding: “I am worried about bumping into him and his family.”

Separate offences

Woodyatt also admitted to a string of further offences committed against other victims in Blaenavon on July 29, 2025. He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating, three counts of criminal damage, threatening to destroy property, public disorder, and possession of cannabis.

Criminal history

The court was told Woodyatt had amassed 14 previous convictions for 29 offences. In 2019, he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Mitigation

His barrister, William Bebb, told the court in mitigation: “He is remorseful and contrite. The defendant has the motivation to change.”

Sentencing

Recorder Greg Bull KC addressed Woodyatt directly, telling him: “You have a history of violent behaviour that is driven through drink or drugs and an inability to control your temper.”

Woodyatt was sentenced to 25 months’ imprisonment for the domestic abuse offences and received a further eight months to run consecutively for the Blaenavon matters, bringing his total custodial sentence to 33 months.

He was also made the subject of five-year restraining orders and must pay a victim surcharge following his release.
