A Merthyr Tydfil man has been sentenced to three years in prison after police discovered a significant quantity of Class A drugs at his property. 💊⚖️
Gavin Morgan, 44, was arrested on February 14 when officers executed a warrant at his home in Glyn Teg, Penyard. Upon entry, Morgan immediately told officers he had cocaine in a drawer in a downstairs bedroom.
A search of the property uncovered a large quantity of crack cocaine and cocaine, with some already prepared into street deals. The cocaine was found in two recycling bags weighing 14.9g and 15.1g respectively, with an estimated street value between £1,000 and £3,500 each.
The crack cocaine weighed 14.6g, with one bag containing six wraps valued between £420 and £540. Officers also seized £2,940 in cash, scales, empty bags, boxes of zip bags, and a mobile phone.
Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard on Friday that Morgan has two previous convictions, including one for possession with intent to supply cocaine, for which he previously received a sentence of two years and four months.
In mitigation, defence counsel Ben Jones told the court that his client had been addicted to cocaine and crack cocaine for some time. After being clean for a period, Morgan relapsed, which led to the breakdown of his marriage and strained relationships with other family members.
Since being remanded in custody, Morgan has completed several courses and expressed desire to become a prison listener.
Judge Lucy Crowther noted during sentencing that the defendant had a “high expectation of financial advantage” before handing down a 36-month prison sentence.
