Man jailed for assaulting Cardiff officers after crash

A man who violently attacked two police officers in Butetown has been jailed for 30 months.

Abdul Yusaf, 27, made off from the scene of a road traffic collision on Bute Street, Cardiff, and became violent when officers attempted to detain him.

Pc Jabber was hit in the eye, causing him to lose vision, while Pc Fitchett was punched and kicked. Extra officers were deployed to Hannah Street and a Taser was used to prevent further injury.

While in custody at Cardiff Bay Police Station, Yusaf racially abused Pc Jabber and refused to provide a breath sample for analysis in relation to the road traffic collision.

Yusaf pleaded guilty to racially/religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault by beating of an emergency worker on February 20, 2022.

He was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court today (Tuesday, November 11, 2025) to 30 months imprisonment.

Yusaf also admitted driving offences of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, driving without insurance, failing to provide specimen for analysis and failing to report a road accident. For these offences he was disqualified from driving for 18 months with an extension of 12 months. He must also pay a £190 surcharge.

Chief Superintendent Marc Attwell, of South Wales Police, said: “Assault is a traumatic offence that would cause great distress to anyone, and it is no different when the victim is a police officer.

“No-one should have to go to work fearing they will be assaulted, especially when they are working hard to keep others safe.

“This was a violent attack on officers who were responding to a call in the community, simply doing their job.

“We welcome the outcome at court and the custodial sentence which means a violent offender is now off the streets.”
