A predator who subjected four children to years of sexual and violent abuse across Scotland and south Wales has been locked up for 16 years.

Alexander Hamill, 68, was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, 4 March, after being found guilty of a catalogue of offences including rape, lewd and libidinous practices, and assault.

The offences

Hamill’s crimes were carried out against two boys and two girls over a six-year period between 1993 and 1999. The abuse took place across the Glasgow and West Lothian areas of Scotland, as well as in Swansea.

The investigation

The matter was first reported to police in January 2022, prompting an investigation led by Police Scotland with support from South Wales Police. Hamill was arrested in June 2023 and stood trial at Glasgow High Court, where he was convicted on Tuesday, 3 February.

Sentencing

Detective Chief Inspector Darren Munogee of Police Scotland described Hamill as a “callous predator” and said he was now being held accountable for his actions.

DCI Munogee said: “Had it not been for the strength of his victims, his crimes may have gone unpunished. I hope that knowing he is now behind bars will offer them some sort of solace.

“This was an extremely challenging investigation, and I would like to thank all of the officers involved, including colleagues in South Wales Police.

“This case also highlights how time is no barrier for us when investigating sexual crimes. If you have ever been subjected to any such offences, then please come forward and report it. You can be assured of being fully supported by specialist officers and our partner agencies.”

South Wales Police teams were thanked for their role in helping bring Hamill to justice.
