A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after he deliberately drove into his former partner’s car multiple times and committed a series of vehicle thefts across Cardiff.
Tyrone Jugessur, of Lynmouth Crescent in Llanrumney, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, criminal damage, and two counts each of theft of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, and driving whilst disqualified.
The ramming
On New Year’s Eve, a witness saw Jugessur’s ex-partner driving a Mercedes through Cardiff, shouting for someone to call the police. Jugessur was pursuing her in a Seat Leon, yelling: “I’m going to f***ing ram you now.”
He then drove into the Mercedes five or six times before fleeing the scene.
The incident came weeks after an argument on December 13, when the defendant became angry after his ex-partner received a phone call from another man. Jugessur snatched her phone and smashed it on the ground, before also breaking her car keys by throwing them on the floor.
Vehicle thefts
On July 30, Jugessur stole a Hyundai in Rhiwbina after its owner left the engine running while delivering newspapers. The victim turned around to find his car being driven away in convoy with a Ford Transit.
The Hyundai was later recovered and Jugessur was found nearby. Checks established he had been driving the stolen vehicle in Sully whilst disqualified and uninsured.
Officers also seized a number of key fobs, a key fob creator, blank key fobs, and tools belonging to a carpenter from the defendant.
The day before, on July 29, a carpenter working in Cardiff had his Ford Transit van stolen after stepping away to speak to a colleague “for around a minute.” His 17-week-old puppy was inside the van at the time, but the dog was later recovered after Jugessur let it out.
Stolen goods
Jugessur was additionally charged with handling stolen goods in connection with a Ford Transit van taken from a BBC sound engineer working in Dinas Powys on May 12. The van had contained around £10,000 worth of equipment when it was stolen.
Sentencing
The court heard Jugessur had 25 previous convictions for 42 offences.
Martha Smith-Higgins, in mitigation, told the court: “He says he needs to change. He wants to go back to being a full-time father to his children who are also suffering due to his stupidity.”
She said the dangerous driving took place “in the heat of the moment” when Jugessur was “angry,” adding that his thefts were “opportunistic” and “not sophisticated.”
Recorder Greg Bull KC jailed Jugessur for 40 months and disqualified him from driving for three years. A five-year restraining order was granted in favour of his ex-partner.
