A family’s beloved pet cat has died after being attacked by two dogs outside their Bridgend home. 12-year-old Sky suffered fatal injuries in the incident that occurred around 6:45pm on March 3. 😿

Teaching assistant and mother-of-one Shaunie James discovered her injured pet after a neighbour alerted her to the attack. “I could hear a crazy dog bark but I didn’t think anything of it. Then my neighbour knocked my door about 15 minutes later and she was crying saying: ‘Come, it’s Sky’. She was there just demolished on the floor,” said Shaunie.

“She had a huge chunk taken out the back of her, all of her mouth was bleeding, all her back was hanging out. It was dark so I just wrapped her up as quickly as I could.”

Shaunie later watched her neighbour’s doorbell CCTV footage which confirmed the attack. However, she’s been left frustrated as current laws regarding attacks on cats differ from those on humans and working dogs, meaning no criminal offence was committed.

“I just wish more could be done. I wish the laws were different and I wish they could be changed – even if they said: ‘We’re fining them £20’ – but nothing is going to be done and Sky has lost her life for absolutely no reason. She trusted people and she trusted animals. She was so trusting she might have thought: ‘If I snuggle in this corner here they won’t notice me’ and that’s what makes it worse.”

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “South Wales Police was called on Monday, March 3, with a report that a cat had been killed by a dog in Bridgend. Following an investigation into the circumstances no criminal offences were committed. The owner of the dog was given suitable advice. The owner of the cat has been updated with the outcome.”
