A 20-year-old man has been jailed after raping a teenage girl who was unconscious due to alcohol consumption. ⚖️

Harry Davies, from Beer, Devon, was sentenced to five years and three months in a young offenders institute after pleading guilty to rape at Newport Crown Court on Friday.

The court heard Davies had earlier apologised to the victim after giving her unwanted attention by touching her bottom and thighs, telling her if she kissed him he would stop. The victim had to break free to escape.

Later that evening, the heavily intoxicated victim fell into a deep sleep after consuming Jagerbombs, cider, vodka and gin. She woke at 4am to find her trousers and underwear removed and Davies next to her. She noticed a wet feeling between her legs and pain in her bottom.

DNA evidence matching Davies was found during the victim’s forensic examination.

In a powerful victim statement, she told the court: “I struggle to understand why you raped me. I was so vulnerable that night… I hate you for what you’ve done. I can’t fall asleep because in moments of silence I think about what you did which plays through my head. I can never answer the questions I have and wake up exhausted and upset.”

She added: “My college work suffered so much, I used to do so well and enjoyed going but that has changed. I can’t study without thinking of the rape and lose concentration on my work. I now hate going to college and try as much as possible to avoid the area.”

The victim also described the impact on her family: “It’s not just my life I feel you have destroyed. I’m so aware my mum is struggling and she’s crying a lot…. It should not have happened, I can’t help but feel so sad when I see my mum crying.”

Davies’ defence barrister, Nigel Fryer, said his client was “truly sorry” and struggled to explain his actions, describing the incident as “out of character” due to intoxication.

Judge Eugene Egan remarked during sentencing: “On that day, two lives changed forever.”

Davies will serve two-thirds of his sentence before release on licence and will be subject to sex offender notification requirements and a restraining order indefinitely.
