Drivers and pedestrians across Wales are being urged to take extra care as icy conditions threaten to cause disruption overnight and into Monday morning.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice covering most of Wales, running from 10pm on Sunday evening until 9am on Monday. Only Wrexham and Flintshire escape the warning area.
Forecasters warn that wet ground left behind from recent rainfall combined with plummeting temperatures will create treacherous icy patches on any surfaces that haven’t been treated. Fog is expected to add to the hazardous conditions in some areas.
“With wet surfaces following recent rain and temperatures falling close to or below freezing, icy patches will be possible on untreated surfaces for a time on Sunday night into Monday morning,” the Met Office said.
However, there remains some uncertainty about how extensively ice will form. Cloud cover across parts of Wales and central southern England could prevent temperatures from dropping low enough in certain locations.
“The extent of cloud cover across parts of Wales and central southern England is more uncertain, which will influence whether temperatures fall sufficiently low enough to allow ice to form,” forecasters added.
