A yellow weather warning has been issued across Wales as forecasters predict heavy downpours will batter the region throughout Monday.

The Met Office alert covers a 12-hour period from midday until just before midnight on Monday, with meteorologists warning that the deluge could cause significant disruption.

Most areas can expect between 10-15mm of rainfall, but locations exposed to strong south to south-easterly winds could see double that amount – with up to 30mm predicted in the worst-affected spots.

The weather service has cautioned that the persistent rain brings the risk of homes and businesses flooding, alongside potential problems for public transport networks and power supplies.

“Heavy rain during Monday afternoon and evening may cause some flooding and disruption to travel,” the Met Office said.

“Bands of rain and heavy showers will move east across southern parts of England and Wales during Monday afternoon and evening.”

The warning comes after a particularly wet start to the year, with Storms Goretti, Ingrid and Chandra leaving multiple communities dealing with flooding throughout January. Numerous trees were also brought down during the stormy conditions.

Welsh areas covered by Monday’s warning include Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen and the Vale of Glamorgan.
