Two young men caught with cocaine concealed inside Kinder egg containers hidden in their underwear have been given suspended sentences at Cardiff Crown Court.

Sentencing

Kyle Williams, 20, of Newport Road, Cwmbran, was sentenced to 33 months’ detention in a young offenders’ institute, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Jaydan Iles, 18, of Pilton Vale, Newport, received 30 months’ detention in a young offenders’ institute, suspended for two years, along with a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 200 hours of unpaid work.

How they were caught

The pair came to the attention of plain clothes officers in Newport on February 22 when a silver Mercedes was seen pulling into a car park close to a red Nissan Qashqai. A strong smell of cannabis emanating from both vehicles prompted officers to intervene, and the two defendants – who were passengers – were detained along with a third man.

What officers found

Prosecutor Thomas Stanway told the court that a search of Iles uncovered three mobile phones, including a burner handset, and £460 in cash. A plastic Kinder egg container was discovered in his underwear holding 17 individual wraps of cocaine with a combined weight of 9.2g, valued at between £740 and £1,120.

Williams was found carrying two phones, one of them a burner, along with £220 in cash. He too had a Kinder egg containing two wraps of cocaine weighing 0.4g each, with a combined street value of £80. A search of the Nissan Qashqai, which belonged to Williams, also turned up two machete-type knives with blades measuring up to 10 inches long.

Phone evidence

Messages recovered from the burner phones belonging to both defendants were consistent with the street-level supply of cocaine. Iles’ device also contained “text bombs” – bulk messages sent out to customers advertising drugs for sale.

Pleas and mitigation

Both men pleaded guilty. Williams admitted possession with intent to supply a class A drug, possession of criminal property, and possession of a bladed article. Iles pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a class A drug and possession of criminal property. Neither defendant had any previous convictions.

Alice Sykes, representing Williams, told the court her client had been offered an apprenticeship and had expressed remorse for his behaviour after spending a short period on remand in custody.

Gareth Williams, acting for Iles, said his client had only just turned 18 years old and had also experienced a taste of custody following his remand.

Judge Eugene Egan passed sentence on both defendants.
