A dangerous driver who collided with a dog walker on a pavement in Newport and then fled whilst the victim was still trapped underneath his car has been jailed.
Ian Probert, 41, from Newport, was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday 16 October after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The collision occurred at around 6.35am on 13 January this year in Rowan Way, Newport, when the woman was walking her pet on the pavement.
Probert also admitted to being the driver of a vehicle involved in a road accident failing to report that accident, and failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver when required.
PC Michelle Greatrex, from Gwent Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said: “Probert failed to stop at the scene of the collision or assist in any manner, taking no responsibility for his actions and showing a blatant disregard for the victim and other road users.
“This collision was entirely avoidable and could have resulted in the needless loss of a life.
“The fact is that Probert’s manner of driving was dangerous and fell far below the standards of a careful, competent driver.
“He entered the junction of Rowan Way on the wrong side of the road and lost control of his vehicle.
“The car veered back into the nearside road and kerb, coming to a halt in a hedge where he struck the victim, leaving her trapped under the vehicle.”
Whilst Probert left the scene, the victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Fortunately, her dog was not seriously injured.
PC Greatrex added: “The victim was a vulnerable road user who should have been safe from harm, on a pavement, while taking her dog for an early morning walk.
“I would like to praise the victim for her dignity throughout this case and wish her well in her continued recovery.
“I would also like to pay tribute to the community who provided information to assist in our investigation.
“This case highlights the importance of driving carefully and the need for all drivers to pay attention at all times.”
Probert will be disqualified from driving for six years and 10 months and will need to pass an extended test.
