A jealous 28-year-old has been sentenced to nearly two years and seven months in prison after assaulting his former partner and burgling a care home in Newport.

Craig Bray carried out the assault in January after accusing his ex-girlfriend of being unfaithful. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard he threw a can of Cherry Coke over her and slapped her during an argument at her home.

Threats and harassment

Prosecutor Hannah Friedman told the court Bray then bombarded the woman with around 140 phone calls over the following days, making chilling threats throughout.

Miss Friedman said: “On one occasion he told her he knew where she was after he saw her getting into a taxi and that he was following her.

“He told her he was going to cut her up.

“The defendant said he would stab her in the neck and that he was going to prison for the rest of his life.”

In a victim impact statement, the woman said: “I’ve been left feeling anxious and unsafe in my own home.”

The burglary

The court also heard that in February, Bray gained access to Cartref Yn Y Coed care home by pretending he was visiting a grandparent before stealing a television from a communal area.

Mitigation and sentencing

Bray pleaded guilty to assault by beating, harassment and burglary. He has 12 previous convictions for 20 offences, including four for burglary.

His barrister, Gareth Williams, acknowledged it was “fairly deplorable behaviour” towards his former partner and said his client was remorseful.

Recorder Dyfed Llion Thomas told Bray the threats he had made were “unforgivably cruel” before handing down a sentence of nearly two years and seven months in prison.

Bray was also made subject to a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and must pay a victim surcharge.
