A jealous man who couldn’t accept the end of his relationship has been jailed after breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulting her new partner.
Dylan Sussex, 23, smashed a window at the woman’s house in Nelson, Caerphilly late at night before climbing inside and punching her new boyfriend in the face.
After the attack, Sussex warned the man: “I’m going to stab you and put a hole in you.”
Cardiff Crown Court heard that earlier that same day, Sussex had told his ex-girlfriend to “kill herself”. Before leaving the scene, he also broke the passenger window of her car.
In a victim impact statement, the woman said: “I suffer from nightmares as a result of the incident. Our home is no longer viewed as a safe place.”
Sussex pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and criminal damage. The offences were committed on Saturday, August 30.
The court heard Sussex has four previous convictions for six offences, including two for drug driving and one each for possession of a class A drug and attempted criminal damage.
Martha Smith-Higgins, representing Sussex, said in mitigation: “He is still young and he has a lot of growing up to do. The defendant has no previous convictions for violence.”
She added: “He could not cope with the breakdown of the relationship. The defendant lost his head.”
The court was told Sussex had worked as a broadband installer but had lost his job and ended up homeless, living in a tent. He had spent close to three months remanded in custody following his arrest.
Recorder Simon Hughes told Sussex his offending was so serious that only an immediate prison sentence could be justified.
Sussex was jailed for 27 months and made the subject of a 10-year restraining order not to contact his ex-girlfriend. He will also have to pay a victim surcharge.
