New data reveals a significant decrease in casualties on Welsh roads following the implementation of the default 20mph speed limit, with approximately 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured compared to the previous year. 📊

The latest statistics, released today, show a remarkable 28% reduction in casualties on 20mph and 30mph roads during the first full year since the policy’s introduction. The period between July and September 2024 recorded the lowest casualty figures since records began, surpassing even pandemic-era numbers.

Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, said: “We have listened to people on the policy and have empowered local authorities to make changes where it is safe to do so.”

However, the Welsh Conservatives are calling for a more targeted approach, suggesting the speed limit should focus specifically on sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals, rather than maintaining what they describe as a “blanket” 20mph limit.

The opposition argues the current default approach has caused “confusion and frustration for drivers” and advocates for implementing the lower speed limit only where necessary.
