The RSPCA has successfully rescued 50 cats from unsuitable living conditions at a Mountain Ash property, where many were found confined in metal cages exposed to the elements.

RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Cooper described the shocking scene: “I walked into the back garden of Pentwyn Avenue and saw adult cats crammed in black metal cages which were full of cat faeces and urine. Although there was an obvious attempt to hide these crates with blankets and branches, the cats were still being rained on and the blankets inside the crates were soaking wet.”

The property owner, Pauline Perry, who was previously banned from keeping cats, appeared at Merthyr Magistrates’ Court and faced four offences under the Animal Welfare Act. She pleaded guilty to two offences and was found guilty of another two.

In November, Perry received a lifetime ban from keeping all animals, along with a 10-week suspended custodial sentence. She was also ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and a £154 victim surcharge.

The rescued cats have been taken to the RSPCA Merthyr Tydfil Veterinary Clinic for assessment and care. 💕
