A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering his son’s girlfriend at her home in Llanelli. 🔴
Richard Jones must serve a minimum of 20 years behind bars for killing Sophie Evans on 5 July 2024, after falsely claiming his son and Ms Evans had swindled him out of money.
At Swansea Crown Court, Judge Geraint Walters told the defendant he had launched a “sustained and frenzied attack on a woman wearing a towel in her own home.”
“Your intent was to kill and she would have recognised that in those anguished moments when she fought for her life before you extinguished it.”
“No sentence can restore life or ease the suffering of those left behind.”
Throughout the proceedings, Richard Jones kept his head bowed. As he was led from the dock, shouts of ‘scumbag’ could be heard.
Jones was found guilty of murder in January. He had denied murdering Sophie Evans, but admitted manslaughter, saying he ‘snapped’ when he suspected the victim and her boyfriend, his son Jamie Davies, were trying to defraud him.
The court heard Jones visited Ms Evans’ home in Bigyn Road at 9:19 am on 5 July, and was inside for just 40 minutes before CCTV captured him running back to his car, returning to the house and then driving off.
Sophie’s body was discovered on the kitchen floor later that day. Jones was arrested near Pembrey Country Park at 8pm.
Paying tribute to Ms Evans, her family said: “Our Sophie was a kind, caring and wonderful mother, daughter, sister, and auntie.
“We all adored her. She was the rock of our family and the best mum to her two little girls. She lit up every room, gave the best advice and loved her family so much.
“We are completely lost without her beautiful smile and comforting ways. Our lives have been completely destroyed by this senseless and cruel act.
“Two little girls cry every night missing their mummy, a father lost his loving daughter and we have lost our amazing sister.
“He has taken everything from us all in the most despicable way possible.
“We will never forget our beautiful Sophie. She will remain in our hearts as that is all we now have.”
In a victim impact statement, Sophie’s sister Kerry Quinlan said “words could not express” how much her two young children miss her. “When they cry themselves to sleep wanting their mum, she is not there and never will be.” 💔
Dyfed-Powys Police Detective Superintendent Gareth Roberts said, “Sophie was vulnerable when Jones attacked, alone in her home with no means of defending herself. She was left with fatal injuries when Jones fled the scene, feeling no remorse or sense of responsibility for what he had done.”
