A father who “snapped” and tried to kill his baby daughter by throwing her at a television has been jailed for 35 years.
Rhydian Lynne Rhys Jamieson, 28, violently hurled the little girl at a TV at their property in Y Ferwig, Ceredigion, causing “catastrophic injuries” that will require her to need lifelong care and support.
After the brutal attack on 15 January 2025, Jamieson left his daughter alone under a duvet with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and extensive cuts and bruising. He then sent a series of chilling texts, including one to the baby’s mother saying: “I’m sorry for what I’ve done.”
Another message read: “I’m scared. I think I’ve killed someone,” whilst a further text said: “I’m going to be on the news.”
Swansea Crown Court heard on Monday that Jamieson, known as Rhys, had previously admitted the offence but later attempted to vacate his plea. His application was refused by Judge Paul Thomas KC.
In a powerful victim impact statement read to the court, the baby’s mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “You’re nothing but a spiteful, disgusting person. The impact on my child will last for the rest of my life. I’ll never understand what you were thinking. It doesn’t matter how long you’ll get because it will never be enough.”
Jamieson did not attend court for his sentencing, prompting Judge Paul Thomas KC to brand him “a coward” who was “consumed by self-pity”.
The judge told him: “You threw the baby with great force at the television. It was a fit of uncontrolled temper. You did not even bother to check whether the baby was alive. It was an act of the most horrendous callousness and self-interest. The child has irreversible brain damage. You have no remorse, no regret, for what you did.”
Jamieson will have to serve two thirds of his 35-year sentence before being eligible for release.
