A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after leading police on a dangerous pursuit through the streets of Rumney whilst over twice the legal alcohol limit.

Officers spotted Shaun Venables drink driving along Aberdarren Road, where he overtook an unmarked police vehicle before speeding away. The chase ended when Venables crashed his car on Trebanog Crescent and fled on foot to an address in Trowbridge.

After being located by firearms officers, Venables failed a breath test, recording readings of 89 at the roadside and 80 in custody – more than double the legal limit.

The Cardiff resident appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday, where he received a 15-month prison sentence. He was also banned from driving for three years after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, possession of Class A drugs, drink driving and driving without insurance. 🚫
