A man from Caldicot has been handed a suspended prison sentence after repeatedly exposing himself to women and a teenage girl at a Berkshire railway station. ⚖️🚉
Stephen Benyon, 49, of Sandy Lane, Caldicot, was sentenced at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, December 17, after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent exposure and one public order offence.
The court heard that Benyon had only recently come off the sex offenders’ register for previous flashing offences in Newport when he committed the new offences at Theale railway station.
The incidents took place between April 2024 and September 2025. At around 10.10pm on April 16, 2024, a 40-year-old woman was crossing an overbridge near the station when she was confronted by a man exposing himself. A further report was made on September 19, 2024, when a man again exposed himself to a woman at the same station.
On August 28, 2025, at around 9.15pm, a 16-year-old girl was approached at Theale station by a man who exposed himself. The same victim later reported another encounter on September 30, 2025, when the man made distressing comments towards her.
British Transport Police carried out an extensive investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, conducting witness enquiries and running plain clothes patrols at the station. A CCTV appeal issued after the September 2024 incident led to several names being put forward, but these were ruled out and the case was temporarily closed until further reports were made.
Following the later incidents, detectives launched a renewed investigation, including nightly patrols and showing CCTV stills to staff and customers at nearby pubs. Benyon was arrested on October 22 after staff at a pub in Church Street recognised him from the images and contacted police. Officers attended in an unmarked vehicle and detained him in the beer garden.
Benyon was handed a total sentence of 12 months in prison, suspended for 24 months. He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £187 victim surcharge, placed on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years, and given an alcohol abstinence requirement, banning him from consuming alcohol for 90 days until March 16, 2026.
Each of the indecent exposure offences carried a three-month sentence, alongside a further sentence for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
Detective Sergeant Antonio Civitillo, of British Transport Police, said the victims had been “going about their business as usual” when they were targeted. He said the offences caused “considerable shock and distress” and praised the victims for coming forward, as well as pub staff who alerted officers.
BTP has said it believes there may be further victims and urged anyone affected to text British Transport Police on 61016, quoting Operation Brennabor. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
