A 42-year-old fraudster has been jailed for four years after selling unsafe and damaged cars worth a total of £300,000 to unsuspecting customers. 🚨
Zana Muhammed, of Princes Street, Flint, was sentenced today at Mold Crown Court after being convicted of fraud. The court heard how Muhammed purchased vehicles from salvage auctions, then advertised and sold them on Facebook and eBay without disclosing that some were write-offs with structural damage.
Prosecutor Lee Reynolds told the court: “Purchasers would have been unlikely to buy the car at all if they would have known (about its condition) or would have been more keen to secure a lower price.”
Some vehicles had serious steering, suspension and brake issues, with one victim breaking down on a 60mph road with her three children in the car before reaching safety.
When customers attempted to return vehicles or seek compensation, Muhammed became “aggressive, abusive and laughed at some customers when they tried to seek refunds.”
The fraudster operated from a former ambulance station on Chester Road, Flint, using various false names including Carwyn Rahman and Ali Kareem. In one instance, a 17-year-old girl spent £5,000 on her first car, only to discover it had been written off.
When threatened with police action, Muhammed reportedly said: “The police are not a thing to him. They are working and he pays their wages.”
Judge His Honour Timothy Petts stated that Muhammed had “lied for two years” and showed no remorse. Questions regarding compensation and asset confiscation will be addressed at a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing later this year. 💷
