Social media platforms could face a blanket ban for under-16s in the UK if they fail to protect young users, Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has warned. The stark message comes as the Government prepares to enforce the Online Safety Act from early 2025.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Kyle emphasised: “When it comes to keeping young people safe, everything is on the table.” 🔐

The Technology Secretary has issued Ofcom’s first-ever strategic priorities, emphasising “safety by design” and increased transparency from tech companies. The watchdog will be tasked with monitoring emerging threats, including AI-related risks.

A new research project will investigate the impact of smartphones and social media on children’s wellbeing.

Ian Russell, chairman of the Molly Rose Foundation, welcomed the announcement: “This announcement outlines a much-needed course correction, vital for improved online safety, and to prevent the new regulation falling badly short of expectations.”

NSPCC strategy director Maria Neophytou praised the initiative, stating it has “the potential to change the online world for children.”

Ofcom responded: “Our resolve to create a safer life online for children and adults in the UK has never been stronger.”
